As a teenager, getting your first car is an exciting time. But, along with the car comes the responsibility of insuring it. There are various car insurers in South Africa, each with a competitive price, and getting a motor cover is possible. While adult car insurance rates are based on factors like your driving history, credit score, and location, teen car insurance rates are based solely on your gender and age.

In South Africa, car insurance for teenagers is expensive. Especially, when a 16-year-old with only a learner’s certificate. It is because teenagers are considered to be high-risk drivers. Teenagers have a higher chance of being involved in an accident than any other age group. The owner of the vehicle which the teenager uses to practice driving or simply going places is responsible to get the teenager insured on his/her car insurance plan. It is cheaper than getting separate car cover for the teen and the teen will practice more responsibility knowing he/she is under a parent or guardians insurance.

Although when your teen has his/her driver’s license once they are eighteen and you register a car under their name, it is best to purchase car insurance in the teenager’s name. They will be the one that will be solely responsible for their driving actions and car insurance cover liabilities as well.

There are a few things you can do to lower your car insurance rates as a teenager. The first is to keep your grades up. Most insurers offer discounts for good students. The second is to take a driver’s education course. It will show insurers that you are serious about being a safe driver. The third is to choose a car that is cheap to insure. Smaller, older cars are typically cheaper to insure than larger, newer ones. Even if you do all of these things, you will still likely pay more for car insurance as a teenager than an adult. But, don’t let that discourage you from getting your own set of wheels. Make sure to shop around and compare rates before buying a policy.
